Langford in Somerset has been at the center of UK meat science and research for forty years, the original Meat Research Institute being opened by HM The Queen in 1968. Expertise in areas as diverse as animal production and muscle structure, refrigeration and microbiology, was located on the rural site shared with Bristol University's School of Veterinary Science. The scientists who comprised about one third of the 200 or so staff, came from all corners of the UK, some from abroad. When a political decision to close The Institute was made in 1990, a group of scientists remained at Langford, in the employment of The University, to continue working on the problems of animal production and welfare, food safety and meat quality. It is against this background that the Langford abattoir now offers a commercial slaughtering service, with the scientific back-up to ensure that the welfare of the slaughtered stock and the quality of the product are first class.
